Memorial Day Gardening
For those readers in the States, it's the kick off for the summer season with the three day weekend called Memorial Day. For the rest of the readers I hope you enjoyed your weekend. It's been hot and muggy here in San Antonio. The sun's been out in full force and the temperature has been in the low 90's.
One of the lily plants we bought at the San Antonio Daylily Society sale at the recent SAWS Garden Jazz Party at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens has just blossomed. I took a couple of photos to share with you. With the heat and sun the petals have fully peeled back to reveal the beautiful throat and colors of the lily.
Living here in San Antonio with all our military bases and personnel one is constantly reminded of the sacrifices and the efforts of military personnel and their families. Memorial Day is the day of remembrance. Many give their lives while others return from service injured in some way.
The injuries which makes it necessary for people to adjust their ways of gardening were one of the inspiration points for me in starting this site. . Whether you call it adaptive gardening, enabled gardening, accessible gardening, everyone deserves the opportunity to garden and I will continue to share ideas, tricks and modifications so no matter one's physical limitations you can continue or start gardening.
For those who are part of our memories, I want to share an article by Angela England. Angela gathered the names of a variety of plants whose names are ones of remembrance. She has taken the time to find plants suitable for all planting zones with names like Remember Me, Immortality, Heaven's Gate, Purple Heart, Freedom and one of my personal lily favorites Angel Flight.
So take a read of Angela's article. A peaceful Memorial Day to everyone.
